Before we won in 2011, I didn’t really get the allure of a cheap replica ring that vaguely resembled something the players may have gotten. It was a neat idea, giving the fans a trinket they could use as a conversation piece, but I never expected it to be something worth waiting in line for. Even after we won the 2006 Series and they announced the replica ring giveaway…I just sneered and thought to myself, “There’s no way the team is going to fork out the money necessary to make a viable copy for that many fans.”
And then I saw the ring…and it looked outstanding.
This year has been dramatically different. Maybe it’s the miracle nature of the 2011 Championship, but the buzz surrounding these rings has been overwhelming. It seems every fan wants one. Different from 2006, these rings are actually wearable (the 2006 version couldn’t be removed from the base). They’re made of some sort of heavy metal, adding to the realistic heft and feel, and the band is packed with details that make it truly memorable. Fans who are lucky enough to get their hands on one will be able to point to the 11 championship years, the Stan Musial statue, and even the rally squirrel and remember the amazing Comeback Cardinals in 2011.
I didn’t fully understand the hype until I saw an example of the ring itself. What could possibly cause these rings to be selling on ebay for up to $130? But once I got mine…I get it. These rings truly are a “piece of history.”
We haven’t really gotten off to the start I had hoped to get off to with these Cardinals U posts – largely because I’m easily distracted – but coming soon, we’re going to have quite a bit of material to cover. Here’s just a couple items coming down the pipeline:
