Today’s Cardinals U post is a quick one – I’ve been blogging quite a bit this week, and with Easter weekend upon us, I need a pseudo-break. But that doesn’t mean I can’t deliver something worth reading, eh?
A while back, Derrick Goold – long-time beat writer for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch – wrote a book called “1oo Things Every Cardinals Fan Should Know & Do Before They Die.” Coincidentally, my wife bought it for me a couple of years ago as an Easter gift (largely because I was hinting like crazy for it). It was excellent. Derrick has a casual style that creates a real connection with Cardinal fans. He understands not only the history of the Redbirds, but the experience of being a Cardinals fan and roaming the downtown streets of St. Louis surrounding Busch Stadium.
The original edition of the book was special enough – including such stories as the origins of the Cardinals logo and what it means to “Meet me at the Musial statue” – but now the publisher has released an updated edition that includes stories of the 2011 World Series run. *Sigh*…now I have to tell my wife she has to buy the same book all over again.
Having met Derrick, he’s a likeable, sincere guy – and it comes across in his reading. I promise you won’t be disappointed if you give his book a shot. And you never know…if you find yourself at Busch Stadium for a Cardinals home game, you might be able to take the book up to the press box and ask Derrick if he will sign it for you. It worked for me ;).
With 125 years of Cardinals history, this lively, detailed book explores the personalities, events, and facts every St. Louis fan should know. It contains crucial information such as important dates, player nicknames, memorable moments, singular achievements, and signature calls. This updated guide to all things Cardinals covers the artifact on public display that pays homage to Busch Stadium, the story behind the infamous “kidnapping” of Flint Rhem, the unforgettable acrobatics of “The Wizard” Ozzie Smith, and details on all 11 World Series championships, including the amazing 2011 triumph.
