Jose Canseco’s Twitter account has become known as a target for Cardinal fans and baseball fans who like to take out their frustration about the steroid era on it’s most prominent member – myself included. But late Wednesday evening (11:30’ish CST), Canseco tweeted the words many of us have been longing to hear:
@TonyLaRussa boy did I mess up by writing that book tell big mac I am sorry
Canseco, recently attempting a return to baseball south of the border, has been unusually vocal via Twitter recently. Most fans have responded by tweeting insults, criticisms, and pleas for an apology to former friend Mark McGwire for outing him in Canseco’s “tell all” book on baseball and the steroid era. Although Canseco typically responds to fans with comments about toughness and positive energy, the fan backlash seems to have been felt at least somewhat by a player all but ostracized by the baseball community. At one point, a person claiming to be Canseco’s girlfriend even took control of his Twitter account to plead for mercy from attacking fans. It didn’t seem to have the desired effect, as the insults only intensified.
Now, Jose seems to be genuinely apologizing for his role in McGwire’s fall from grace, and he seems to want to pass that sentiment on to his former Bash Brother by way of their manager, Tony La Russa.
It seems the steroid era’s most visible participant is finally ready to make amends…at least to Big Mac, anyway.
UPDATE: Tony La Russa has responded to Jose Canseco via Twitter. His words:
@TonyLaRussa: @JoseCanseco Appreciate your comments. you watched me manage so you know we all make mistakes. Life’s too short, enjoy yours
Jose Canseco then responded to Tony with this:
@JoseCanseco: @TonyLaRussa means so much it is so dark right now but will get better .hug for u
On a side note…one would think these two could pick up the phone rather than hold a personal, weighty conversation through Twitter…no?
