Looking at the boxscore, TLR seems to have Ryan Ludwick playing in center field (CF). That, combined with TLR’s previous comment saying he would have no problem playing Ludwick in center (Ryan used to play center in the minors before knee surgery), makes me wonder…has Mather’s .217 average put him in danger of missing the roster?
With Stavinoha hitting closer to .400 than .300, and Craig much closer to .300 than Mather could even hope to get at this point in the Spring…could TLR designate Ludwick as his back-up CF option and place Stav/Craig on the team?
Doubtful…but interesting. The Cardinals have seen a Mather tail-off before (albeit due to wrist injury) in the Spring. And Joey Bombs hasn’t exactly been stellar in CF this Spring. PLUS…the Cardinals STILL seem to be a bit frustrated with their concerns about Mather’s long swing. How long do you try to shorten a player’s swing before you go a different direction?
Interesting, anyway…
