We are now hearing that Adam Ottavino is a “leading candidate” for one of the few remaining spots in the Cardinals’ bullpen. This comes shortly after hearing that reliever Josh Kinney was among those pitchers re-assigned to the minor leagues.
Cards ‘N Stuff previously identified Ottavino as a possible dark horse (Click Here for Previous Post) in the running for a bullpen roster spot. His recent string of success – along with his consistent workload (2+ innings per appearance) – subtly pointed to increased attention.
Now the competition gets serious. In the past, Ottavino has been known for his inconsistent performance as much as his delivery issues. If he wants to make the big league ‘pen, he’ll have to show Tony and Dunc he can repeat his scoreless innings on a consistent basis.
Ottavino is scheduled to appear in Monday’s contest on 2-days rest. This is a big test for the right-hander. How he bounces back after short rest will be a critical factor in his bullpen candidacy.
